a birth of a butterfly

The piece unfolds like the life cycle of a butterfly: from egg to larva, pupa, and finally to adulthood. At the end of the piece, the butterfly takes full control and energetically flies around.
Originally, I composed this piece with the sound of the Taepyeongso in mind, a traditional Korean wind instrument. The Taepyeongso has a brassy quality, similar to a trumpet but with a sharper and biting tone. Although traditionally limited to playing in Eb or Ab, this piece pushes beyond those limitations and incorporates a tasteful blend of harmonies and rhythms. The composition has been adapted for the flute, showcasing the flute’s rapid runs and piercing wind-like sounds. It is a reimagining of Korean traditional music infused with my own musical instincts, bridging the gap between the past and present, and balancing between dynamic and serene elements.
