Last Blue for Oboe & Piano
description
For oboe & piano
written in 2021
Derived from one of my operas, ‘killing time,’ the melody in this composition serves as a poignant thread weaving through a tapestry of emotions—sorrow, lament, loneliness, and grief. Created during the midst of an epidemic that brought everything to a standstill, the piece encapsulates a period when the weight of sadness seemed eternal. In contemplating the enduring nature of that melancholy, I aimed to transform it into a ‘lasting’ sadness, yet also harboring a hope that it would be the ‘last’ sorrow (depicted in shades of blue).
The composition unfolds as a nuanced dialogue between the oboe and piano, their conversations resonating with the intricacies of shared emotion. Melodic lines intertwine, creating a musical narrative that traverses the complex landscape of human experience. This piece invites listeners to embark on a reflective journey, exploring the depths of emotional intricacies amid moments of profound stillness and uncertainty.
