For viola & piano
written in 2018
The title of the piece, as suggestive as it is, immediately establishes a foreboding and ominous atmosphere right from the outset. This dark ambiance unfolds through the use of undulating trills and brief, enigmatic notes emanating from both the viola and piano, complemented by mysterious harmonies. Dynamics and unique instrumental techniques further contribute to the eerie depth of this shadowy soundscape.
Within the vast expanse of darkness, an entire individual color palette emerges, each hue portraying different facets of this murkiness. The diverse elements of this obscurity manifest as the second and third themes. While the first theme exudes a sense of recklessness and spookiness, the second theme takes on a more melodic and stationary character. Delving deeper into the second theme, it primarily consists of the same notes but in varied rhythms. The melody of the second theme draws inspiration from Korean traditional music, yet the piano accompaniment maintains the overall gloomy atmosphere. In contrast, the third theme emanates tranquility, evoking a sense of distant sound. It unfolds quietly, offering soft colors as if one were enveloped in complete darkness, unable to discern anything.
Envision being shrouded in an impenetrable blackness where visibility is nonexistent. The emotions elicited might range from fear and terror to panic. In the attempt to escape, one might navigate through the darkness, but the pitch-black void remains unyielding. This composition encapsulates the experience of dwelling in utter darkness, yet it also unveils unexpected emotions beyond the anticipated realm of terror and fear.
