A Collection of Korean Tunes

About the Work

I. ARIRANG: Arirang, a beloved Korean folk tune, serves as the foundation for this collection. Here, it is reimagined with lush romantic harmony, expressive rubato, and intricate clarinet ornaments that echo the vocal bends of traditional Pansori. II. GANGGANGSULLAE: An ancient Korean harvest ritual dance where women circle under the full moon. The tempo gradually accelerandos from a stately prayer into an ecstatic, whirlwind finale. III. FROG SONG (Gae-goori): A witty, virtuosic portrayal of leaping frogs with playful rhythmic hiccups and percussive piano clusters.
