Dance of the Blades

Dance of the Blades (칼날의 춤) explores the collision between rhythmic propulsion, breath, and raw sonic energy. Scored for a hybrid ensemble of traditional Korean instruments (haegeum, gayageum, and piri) alongside piano, violin, and cello, the work moves through relentless rhythmic transformations and sharply contoured gestures that blur the boundary between ritual, dance, and eruption. The piece draws inspiration from the visceral drive and asymmetrical rhythmic vitality of Korean traditional music, while also reflecting a tense, percussive energy similar to Bartók's chromatic intensity. Sliding lines, aggressive glissandi, and layered rhythmic cells continuously destabilize the musical surface, creating a sense of motion that rarely settles. Rather than depicting literal blades, the title suggests movement itself as something cutting, flashing, and volatile. At times the ensemble behaves as a single kinetic force; elsewhere, individual instruments fracture outward in sharp bursts of color and texture. Throughout the work, moments of mounting tension repeatedly surge toward climactic peaks before dissolving into new waves of momentum.
