Mnemonic Dust

The word mnemonic refers to something that helps us remember—a trace or pattern that brings a forgotten moment back to the surface. In Mnemonic Dust, sound itself becomes that mnemonic: a fragile key to sensations that can't be precisely recalled or described. The piece unfolds slowly, balanced between stillness and tension. A cold, steady snare drum pulse anchors the ensemble—mechanical yet fragile, quietly unsettling the calm surface. Around it, the harmony moves in gradual, continuous shifts, as instruments sustain tones that subtly bend, overlap, and realign. These slight glissandi create a sense of breathing within the ensemble, where harmony seems to drift rather than progress. Over time, the sound gains density. Each sustained pitch leans into the next; friction builds, and harmonic color deepens until the calm surface begins to fracture. The energy, once restrained, expands into a brief, heightened surge—a moment when memory feels fully present, bright and uncontainable. Then the pressure builds. The harmony strains and breaks open—sound surges outward, bright and unrestrained.
